Ann is awesome. She is probably 40 something. I grew up in the same ward as her (her kids were a little younger than me) and she is just a character! You know...the loud boisterous, funny, always happy, friendly outgoing kind. Ya can't help but LOVE her.
The other day on face book she had me cracking up.
She admitted the unadmittable.
is that a word?
She told the world she DID NOT know what scallions were.
SERIOUSLY!
Brave.
Gutsy.
The awesome thing though was I DID NOT know what they were either. Then my sister commented that she DID NOT know as well. Then another common friend of ours DID NOT know EITHER!! And even MORE people commented that they had just barely learned what they were as well!!!!
It was AWESOME.
However, a few "know it all's" raved about their knowledge of scallions. Boo hiss on them. They think they know everything. ☺
So...let me show you what the heck these stupid things we call scallions ARE!!
I know you're dying to find out.
TAH DAH:
Those are scallions. Now I don't want to confuse you.
Stay with me people.
You're wondering..."then what the heck are the things below?"
These my friends are green onions.
YES.
I know.
I know what you're thinking.
YES.
Anticlimactic.
THEY ARE THE SAME FRIGGIN' THING!!!!
This is knew info right!? Vege's 101...NOT. Puh-lease. This is Vege's 901.
Ann finally googled it because she was sick of not knowing what the heck they were!
Why can't they just be called GREEN ONIONS? I don't get it. Why complicate things. Who the heck loser person even changed the name?
Anyways. I just wanted to help you out too. Some things in life are so confusing. At least we have one of them straightened out. UNLESS. Are you one of those "know it all's?"
Did you already know this? Seriously. Come on. Fess up. And if so...big capital W. Whateva!!

ummm
I did know already what they were..
BUT
do I get to be on the ok list if I admit that Im always confusing the word with scallops? :)
AND that gets me more confused because scallops are some kind of fish thing right? but when we lived in England, they had 'scallops' that were potato scallops.. just a flat slice of potato,
dipped in batter and deep fried. the inside of a scallop is like a chip
(french fry), and the outside is crispy batter. they didnt call them 'potato scallops' though.. just scallops.. and they had them in fish and chip places which got me more confused!
(i dont like fish) but i love the potato scallops
which really have nothing to do with a scallion.. lol
I did know that one...but I get confused my shallots which I guess are tiny little onions. Shallots...scallions...onions....it's all so complicated.
I think maybe calling them green onions is a Utah thing??
How about sultana? Have you heard of those? That's what they call a raisin in Australia. Or my other favorite is capsicum. You'll find them on nearly every pizza here. Care to guess what that is? It's a strange word for green pepper. I wish I could think of more that I've encountered. Always love your posts :)
Its been fun reading your posts and catching up. You cover a lot of topics in one week, girl!! Love it all!
I wasn't quite sure if they were the same or not! I saw a chef on tv called what I thought were green onions scallions and it totally confused me. I figured they looked the same, it was close enough. I'm from California and we called them green onions too!
I did not know that. I have wondered when they are called for in a recipe. I just havent used them. How funny is that?
I did know what they were before your post but I will have to admit I always get them confused with scallops! And I'm right along with ya on the stupid person that tried to fancy things up and refer to green onions as "scallions"
scallops, scallions, shallots... i gave up a long time ago! it's all so confusing.
Sorry but I knew what a scallion was.
I learned about these a few years ago when I was trying a new recipe that called for "scallions". I went to the grocery store with my shopping list and asked the first worker I found what the heck they were. Luckily he worked in the produce section and knew his stuff!!! It's great when you get to learn something new everyday!!!
